Distressed corporate loans have been there in the system for several years, and many of them are eventually taken for resolution though the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code. Distressed retail loans are mostly the outcome of either exuberant lending, resulting into abdication of underwriting standards, or macroeconomic factors such as liquidity strain, unemployment, inflationary pressures affecting urban incomes, etc. Both in case of corporate and retail distressed loans, the lending institutions – banks as well as non-banking financial companies – have to be relieved from the stock of sticky loans that clog their cashflow cycles, and therefore, the existence of an active secondary market in non-performing loans is a key part of the lending ecosystem.
In India, the asset reconstruction companies and special situation funds are specialised in secondary market for distressed loans, however, a complete range of players – collection technology companies, valuers, special services, funders, resolution entities, etc. – in distressed loans are coming up.
In this scenario, this Full day Conference, one of the first of its kind, aims at recognition of the developments, as also leading the way to aggregate, motivate and fill the gaps in the ecosystem.
As a result of the 12th November 2021 Circular of the RBI, it is commonly expected that retail GNPA numbers will shoot up sharply. There is expected to be strong secondary market activity – hence, this Conference is quite timely too.
